In 1994 a Colt Committee was formed with the aim of promoting H. S. Colt as one of the leading golf course designers ever. The committee decided an annual tournament should be held, at which members of Colt courses all around the world could participate in.

Stoke Park Club was chosen as the venue, and the format was devised taking three golfers from each venue. The teams play 18 holes in the morning, followed by another nine in the afternoon. The best two scores from the three players are taken both morning and afternoon leading to a 27 hole team total.
